Social Skills Therapy

Social skills therapy is used to work with children, adolescents, and adults that have difficulty initiating and maintaining relationships with their peers.

Social skills therapy is also used to work with individuals diagnosed with Autism and Asperger's Syndrome.

Social skill deficits are a significant problem that affects every individual on the autism spectrum.

For example, individuals with autism and Asperger's Syndrome have difficulty

  • Maintaining eye contact with others
  • Recognizing facial expressions
  • Recognizing other’s feelings
  • Initiating conversations or play with others
  • Following the conversation of others
  • Turn taking and sharing
  • Recognizing boundaries
  • Understanding jokes, sarcasm, implied meaning, and the non literal meaning of commonly used phrases.
  • Understanding “social rules” or exceptions to the “rules”, which can be especially problematical as they enter into junior high and high school.

These are just a few of the social skills that children on the autism spectrum lack, but that cause significant problems for them in different social setting.

While they long to have relationships with others, they feel relationships are stressful and overwhelming.  So many of these individuals avoid social situations and isolate themselves.

Individuals on the autism spectrum can be taught the skills they need through individual therapy sessions and group sessions that will allow them to be successful in a variety of social situations.  At BrainWise we offer both individual and group therapy sessions that allow our clients to learn the social skills they need to be successful at developing and maintaining relationships.

As with all of the services we offer at BrainWise, we believe working with children on the autism spectrum requires that everyone on the child’s treatment team work together.  Along with the family, we believe in interacting with teachers, school counselors, doctors, ABA therapists, speech therapists, physical therapists, nutritionists, and other professional on the child’s treatment team. By working together we believe that we can all grow and continue to learn from one another how best to help our clients.
