Tuberous Sclerosis

Tuberous Sclerosis (TSC) is a rare genetic disease causing benign tumors to grow in the brain and on other vital organs, such as the kidneys, heart, eyes, lungs, and skin. It also affects the central nervous system. Other common symptoms associated with TSC include seizures, mental retardation, behavior problems, and skin abnormalities. Some signs of TSC can be seen at birth, still in many cases the full symptoms may take some time to develop. There are three types of brain tumors found in individuals with TSC:

  • Cortical tubers on the surface of the brain
  • Subependymal nodules that form in the walls of the ventricles of the brain
  • Giant-Cell astrocytomas can block the flow of important brain fluids in the brain
